El próximo fin de semana (13 y 14 de Septiembre de 2008) se va a disputar en Navatejera el Torneo Interterritorial de selecciones autonómicas. En este torneo participan 11 federaciones territoriales en 8 categorías (benjamín, alevín, infantil y juvenil tanto en masculino como en femenino).

China’s Li Xiaoxia captured the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup title in the Malaysia’s capital city of Kula Lumpur on the evening of Monday 8th September 2008.

La china Li Xiaoxia ganó la copa del Mundo Wolkswagen en la capital de Malasia, Kuala Lumpur en la tarde del lunes 8 de Septiembre de 2008.

She beat Hong Kong’s Tie Yana in straight games at the final hurdle, securing victory by the margin of 11-4, 11-3, 11-3, 14-12.

Batió a Tie Yana de Honk Kong en 4 juegos en la final con el resultado de 11-4, 11-3, 11-3, 14-12.

It was only Li Xiaoxia’s second career appearance in the annual event, her only previous participation being in 2006 in Urumqi, in northern China.

In 2002 in Singapore and in 2004 in Hagzhou she finished in a highly creditable third place, whilst on the last three occasions – Guangzhou 2005, Urumqi 2006, Chengdu 2007 – she has finished in fourth spot; her lowest eventual position was a quarter-finalist on home soil in Hong Kong in 2003.

In September, Li Xiaoxia won in four straight games in the third round of the Women’s Singles event at the Panasonic China Open, whilst the following week she succeeded at the same stage in six games at the Volkswagen Open China.

Adham Sharara, how happy are you with the Olympic Games in Beijing?
Actually very happy, even if there wasn’t everything perfect at the beginning. The light was not optimal and the Peking Gymnasium was built for university purposes. There was even a swimming pool in the basement. The hall is ideal to practise lots of different sports in it. But for the table tennis events, for the days where we played on eight tables, it was too small. But everything that we wanted from the organisers, we got immediately. From this point of view we’ve had a perfect organisation. However, there are other reasons why I am not entirely happy.

Adham Sharara, ¿cómo de contento está con los JJ.OO. de Pekín? En realidad muy contento incluso teniendo en cuenta que no todo estuvo perfecto al principio. La iluminación no era óptima y el Gimnasio de Pekín se construyó con fines universitarios. Incluso había una piscina debajo. La sala es ideal para practicar montones de deportes diferentes. Para los eventos de tenis de mesa, cuando se jugaba en 8 mesas, la sala era demasiado pequeña. Pero todo lo que necesitabamos de los organizadores lo teníamos inmediatamente. Desde este punto de vista, hemos tenido una organización perfecta. No obstante, hay otras razones por las que no estoy del todo contento.

Such as?
The results hurt me as the president of the world federation. It was predictable that China would dominate the team events; but the fact that China won all the Singles medals is not good for our sport. To realise that Jörgen Persson with his 42 years was the only non-Chinese in the semi-finals, is something I don’t like. In Europe there are several things that don’t work properly.

¿Cómo por ejemplo?
Los resultados me dolieron como Presidente de la federación internacional. Era predecible que China dominaría la competición de equipos; pero el hecho de que China ganara todas las medallas en individuales no es bueno para nuestro deporte. Jörgen Persson, de 42 años fue el único no chino en las semifinales y eso es algo que no me gusta. En Europa hay varias cosas que no funcionan adecuadamente.

What do you mean in particular?
I am afraid that Europe has a problem in terms of training. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to observe the training of Chinese players. That’s a different world than anywhere else. The coaching level in China is higher than in Europe. I think that Europe should try to concentrate on the development of young players. Therefore I have high hopes in the Werner Schlager Academy that is about to be formed in Schwechat. Europe must take care that young players reach sooner a high level. Europe’s former top players like Waldner, Gatien or also Stellan Bengtsson were already among the top of the world at the age of 18 or 19. That’s what I am missing today. I also tell you honestly that Germany did disappoint me a bit at these Games.

¿A qué se refiere concretamente?
Me temo que Europa tiene un problema en relación a los entrenamientos. Hace unas pocas semanas tuve la oportunidad de observar el entrenamiento de jugadores chinos. Es muy diferente que en cualquier otro sitio. El nivel de los entrenadores en China es más alto que en Europa. Creo que Europa debería concentrarse en el desarrollo de jugadores jovenes. Por ello tengo grandes esperanzas en la escuela de Werner Schlager que está a punto de abrir en Schwechat. Europa debe procurar que los jugadores jovenes alcancen antes un nivel alto. Los antiguos jugadores mejores de Europa como Waldner, Gatien o también Stellan Bengtsson estaban entre los mejores del mundo cuando tenían 18 o 19 años. Eso es lo que echo de menos hoy en día. También le digo honestamente que Alemania me decepcionó un poco en estos Juegos.

But Germany won silver in the Team event. Austria would have been very happy about that.
That’s right but one could not expect Austria to be in the Bronze Medal match. Austria outmatched the expectations and played very well. Especially Robert Gardos did impress me a lot here. He used to be a good player before, but here he reached the next step.

Pero Alemania ganó la plata en la competición de equipos. Austria hubiera estado muy contenta con esa plata.
Eso es correcto pero nadie esperaba que Austria pudiera luchar por el bronce. Austria superó las expectativas y jugó muy bien. Especialmente Robert Gardos me impresionó mucho aquí. Era un buen jugador antes pero aquí ha alcanzado el siguiente peldaño.

And what didn’t you like at Germany?
After they reached the team final, somehow I had the impression, that the team and the staff were already confident with it. And it was a beautiful success, but I’ve missed the absolute feeling that Germany really wanted to attack and beat China. It’s not that they didn’t fight, but something was missing. I also told that to the German officials.

¿Y que no le gustó de Alemania?
Después de que alcanzaran la final por equipos, de alguna manera tuve la impresión de que el equipo y los técnicos ya estaban satisfechos con eso. Y fue un bonito éxito pero he echado de menos el sentimiento absoluto de que Alemania realmente quería atacar y ganar a China. No es que no lucharan pero faltaba algo. Le dije esto mismo a los técnicos alemanes.

Does China’s dominance of the international table tennis squeeze down the TV ratings and the mood of the sponsors?
No, absolutely not. The sponsors want to see themselves on TV and that’s what they do sufficiently above all at World Championships and at the World Cup or at tournaments. The TV ratings here in China were a sensation for our sport. I just got the ratings of the first week and table tennis was number one on four out of seven days. This is great for our sport and a big chance for the future.

¿El dominio internacional de China en el tenis de mesa hace bajar las audiencias de televisión y las ganas de invertir de los esponsors?
No, en absoluto. Los esponsors quieren verse en la televisión y eso es lo que tienen en los campeonatos del Mundo, en la Copa del Mundo y en los torneos. Los índices de audiencia de televisión en China fueron sensacionales para nuestro deporte. Sólo tuve los índices de la primera semana y el tenis de mesa era el número 1 en 4 de los siete días. Esto es bueno para nuestro deporte y una gran oportunidad para el futuro.

And what can we do now to hinder that China’s advantage becomes even bigger?
I have very important meetings in China, also with the Chinese. I want an opening of China in favour of our sport. China has to understand that it damages its own sport, when the dominance is crushing. Then the spectators will lose interest. I want to reach an ongoing exchange for coaches. I want experiences to be exchanged between China and the rest of the world. And the training attitude of the Europeans has to change.

¿Y qué podemos hacer ahora para evitar que la ventaja de China llegue a ser incluso mayor?
Tengo reuniones muy importantes en China, también con los chinos. Quiero una apertura de China en favor de nuestro deporte. China debe entender que su predominio daña nuestro deporte cuando es tan exagerado. De esa manera los espectadores perderán interés. Quiero conseguir un intercambio de entrenadores. Quiero que se intercambien experiencias entre China y el resto del mundo. Y la actitud en los entrenamientos de los europeos debe cambiar.

In terms of what?
When I visited the training in China, I got the impression that the players were glad when the exposures became bigger. They sustained totally different exposures. And it would never happen that, as I already noticed in Europe, players practise in a training session without a coach standing beside. And above all: in Europe they stop with the training when they are tired. That’s a question of mentality and motivation that has to come from the trainers too. Beside this, coaches in Europe work too long on the same spot; I have my fill of seeing trainers that coach during 20 years the same national team. The principle in China is to change the coach every six years to avoid that they burn out. And Europe needs more young trainers. Players, that did not reach the very top, should start early to work as coaches. They have to be educated with experience and creativity. This is why I trust so much in Werner Schlager and his future centre, because he is one that has won everything and he can pass a lot. When young people once quit their coaching job, they are still young enough to do something else. When a coach stops at the age of 55, it’s not easy to find a job.

¿En relación a qué?
Cuando visité los entrenamientos en China, tuve la impresión de que a los jugadores les gustaba más cuando más difícil era el entrenamiento. Y nunca pasaría lo que ya he visto en Europa, jugadores entrenando sin un entrenador a su lado. Y además de esto, en Europa los jugadores paran de entrenar cuando están cansados. Se trata de mentalidad y motivación que tiene que venir de los entrenadores también. También veo que en Europa los entrenadores trabajan demasiado tiempo en el mismo sitio; he visto entrenadores que han sido durante 20 años los seleccionadores de su país. El principio en China es cambiar el entrenador cada 6 años para evitar "quemarse". Y Europa necesita más entrenadores jovenes. Los jugadores que no alcancen el nivel más alto deberían empezar a trabajar con entrenadores. Deben ser educados con experiencia y creatividad. Por ello confío en Werner Schlager y su futura escuela porque él lo ha ganado todo y puede enseñar mucho.Cuando la gente joven deje su trabajo de entrenador todavía pueden encontrar otra cosa. Cuando un entrenador se retira a los 55 años no es fácil encontrar otro trabajo.

The ITTF has made several drastic rules changes. Are there any further to come?
We should always improve. No changes just to change anything, but there are still many options.

La ITTF ha hecho varios cambios drásticos de reglamentación. ¿Hay más cambios a la vista?
Siempre debemos mejorar. No hay cambios simplemente por cambiar, pero aún hay muchas opciones.

Which ones for instance?
The enlargement of the balls from 38 to 40 millimetres has had a good impact on our sport. The players first complained rightly that the quality of the balls suffered. That’s where we insist. We already have 42 millimetre balls in a test series and are waiting for the results. Beside that I discovered that there is no 40 millimetre ball in the world. All of them are slightly bigger than 39.5 millimetres. And of course, the increase of the net up to one centimetre is always a topic. But for me it is clear that we will not approach a next rules change until the players had time enough to adapt the new circumstances owing to the new gluing rule.

¿Cuáles por ejemplo?
El agrandamiento de la bola de 38 a 40 milímetros tuvo un buen impacto en nuestro deporte. Al principio los jugadores se quejaron de que la calidad de las pelotas había bajado. En eso es en lo que insistimos. Ya estamos haciendo pruebas con pelotas de 42 milímetros y estamos esperando los resultados. A raíz de esto descubrí que no hay una sola pelota de 40 mm en el mundo. Todas las pelotas son ligeramente más grandes de 39,5 mm. Y desde luego, el subir 1 cm la red siempre es una opción. Pero tengo claro que no se abordarán nuevos cambios en la reglamentación hasta que los jugadores hayan tenido tiempo de adaptarse a la nueva reglamentación sobre el pegamento. 

Do you want to heighten the net and increase the ball size to slow down the game and to make it more comprehensible?
Yes, I want to bring back the defensive players in our sport. That’s attractive and I will only stop developing our sport when the people in Canada, Germany or also in your country, Austria recognise the players on the streets and ask for autographs; when the TV stations fight for the broadcasting rights; and when all the halls are packed with spectators. Only when all this is done we may be happy and stop temporarily with the development of our sport.

¿Quiere subir la red y aumentar el tamaño de la pelota para hacer más lento el deporte y que sea más entendible?
Sí, quiero que vuelvan los jugadores defensivos a nuestro deporte. Eso es atractivo y sólo pararé de desarrollar nuestro deporte cuando la gente en Canadá, Alemania o en tu propio país, Austria, reconozca a los jugadores por la calle y les pida autógrafos; cuando las cadenas de televisión luchen por los derechos de retransmisión; y cuando todos los pabellones estén llenos de espectadores. Sólo cuando todo esto sea una realidad podremos estar felices y parar temporalmente de desarrollar nuestro deporte.

But the players often dislike rules changes.
And that’s what I don’t understand. First of all nothing at all has changed during the last 64 years in our sport and especially now Europeans should be entirely happy since chances give them the chance to come closer to China. I just have a funny example in my mind.

Y eso es lo que no entiendo. Lo primero es que nada en absoluto había cambiado en los últimos 64 años en nuestro deporte y los europeos, especialmente, deberían ser enteramente felices porque los cambios les dan la oportunidad de acercarse a China. Ahora mismo tengo un ejemplo divertido en mi cabeza.

Which one?
At the time when we shortened the games from 21 to 11 points, Werner Schlager did not play well at the following World Cup. At that evening his coach Ferenc Karsai blamed me to kill the sport of table tennis. A little later Werner became World Champion 2003 in Paris at a tournament played on 11 points. That’s what I mean. Europeans have to change their mentality and think more positive.

¿Cuál?
En la época en que acortamos los juegos de 21 a 11 puntos, Werner Schlager no jugó bien en la siguiente Copa del Mundo. Por la tarde su entrenador Ferenc Karsai me culpó de matar el deporte del tenis de mesa. Poco después, Werner Schlager fue campeón del Mundo en París en 2003 en un torneo jugado a 11 puntos. A eso me refiero. Los europeos deben cambiar su mentalidad y pensar más positivo.

In Beijing there were Singles and Team events. Will it be the same programme in London 2012?
I want to discuss my desires for changes very soon first internally in the ITTF and then with the IOC. An individual event with a maximum of two players by country. Therewith we can hinder that a country like China makes the clean sweep. Furthermore I want a Team event because it is the emotional climax and that’s what it was here. The duel between two countries polarises more than an inner-Chinese final in the Singles. And I want again a Doubles competition with 16 pairs and only one double per nation. We will discuss that and proceed then. Basically table tennis has great prospects; we only need to use them.

En Pekín se jugó pruebas de individuales y de equipos. ¿Habrá el mismo programa en Londres 2012?
Quiero discutir mis deseos de cambios muy pronto primero internamente en la ITTF y entonces con el COI. Sería un campeonato individual con un máximo de 2 jugadores por país. De esa manera podemos evitar que países como China lo barran. También quiero una prueba por equipos por el clima emocional. El duelo entre 2 países atrae más que una final entre jugadores chinos en individual. Y quiero otra vez una competición en dobles con 16 parejas y sólo una pareja por país. Lo discutiremos y procederemos entonces. Básicamente, el tenis de mesa tiene una gran perspectiva; sólo necesitamos usarla.
